Cariology has recently attracted major attention worldwide and growing interest has been shown in a variety of cariological approaches that can be employed in dental clinics, such as caries risk factor analysis and patient lifestyle improvement. However, in Scandinavia cariology was established as a separate discipline more than 30 years ago. Cariology encompasses all fields related to the study of dental caries, from epidemiology, causality and its characteristics, to clinical management, including primary and secondary prevention. This world trend towards cariology has already influenced Japanese dentistry.
We already know that we need to reorganize our knowledge of cariology to better and systematically understand dental caries.
This will continue to challenge us in the 21st century. Likewise there is a growing demand to translate this understanding into daily clinical practice and management of dental caries.
Minimum Intervention proposes a practical way of applying the principles of cariology into every day clinical dental practice.
