Mutans streptcocci
Mutans streptococci produce large quantities of strong acid, adhere well to the tooth surface and can survive for long periods in an acid environment. As such they are deeply associated with all aspects of dental caries development and progress.
In recent years it has become widely accepted that dental caries is an infectious disease, in which mutans streptococci have a central role. Among the mutans streptococci, S.mutans and S.sobrinus have attracted major interest because of their high cariogenic potential.
Various acid producing bacteria
Other
than S.mutans and S.sobrinus, there are a number of acid producing bacteria such as Lactobacilli, which are also related to the development and progress of dental caries.
