Age and Caries Risk |
|
Like a newborn baby, a newly erupted tooth is fragile and immature. The tooth at this stage is highly susceptible to dental caries and should caries commence at this time, it will progress very rapidly. Demineralization starts when the pH falls to somewhere between 5.5. and 5.7 for mature enamel. This is known as the critical pH. However, demineralization commences for newly erupted permanent teeth, primary [deciduous] teeth and exposed root surfaces at pH 6.2. Caries risk also changes as life style and dietary habits change. Finally, age and systemic disease bring about an increased use of medications, many of which can adversely affect salivary flow rates and caries risk.
