Control consists of two linked components:
“Restoration & Repair” and “Monitoring & Observation”.
When we identify a caries lesion, we should differentiate whether the lesion requires immediate restorative treatment or can be “healed”
by appropriate preventive treatment and maintenance.
As preventive programs proceed more favorably, the focus of treatment is transferred from “Restoration & Repair” to “ Monitoring & Observation”.
Naturally, the ideal outcome for both dentists and patients is a cycle consisting of three phases: (1) regular recall; (2) accurate diagnosis and identification of caries; (3) preventive treatment combined with appropriate clinical care where necessary.
